A leg, which was hanging out of the Boronia Heights' man's Ford Falcon's boot, turned out to be a mannequin when police pulled him over last month in Slacks Creek.
Police were responding to reports from startled residents who thought someone was trapped in the man's boot.
"It sticks out sometimes," the man can be heard saying in a video released by police.
"That's why we stopped you, yeah," an officer said in the video.
While that turned out to be a fake, the fines the 37-year-old faced after it were very much real.
Police said the man had three bald tyres, and was missing multiple wheel nuts.
His number plates were obscured by cables.
