Canberra Croatia FC continued its undefeated streak on Sunday thanks to a 2-1 win over Gungahlin United FC.
The side will reclaim top spot on the ladder with 19 points, after a short-lived 24 hour Belconnen United FC reign. Belconnen sits on 16 points following its 1-1 draw against West Canberra Wanderers FC on Saturday.
Croatia coach Nik Brozinic said the side was glad to continue its unbeaten run, despite the absence of four first grade players.
"There's a winning mentality in this squad and when we're not in front we struggle mentally sometimes to pull ourselves back into games, but we've done it twice this year," he said. "So I think it's just working on that mental side of football and decision-making."
Croatia's first goal was courtesy of a penalty. A shot was cleared off the goal line by Gungahlin's Brigitte Sander, before the referee pointed to the spot for an earlier handball by the visitors. Winger Brittany Palombi put it away in the 28th minute to make it 1-0.
MORE IN SOCCER:
United found its equaliser five minutes before half-time. Elke Aitolu fired her free kick at goalkeeper Alexandra Hinson, who pushed it into the path of Natalie De Marco to make it 1-1.
Croatia was lucky to come away with the three points, as Gungahlin's Aitolu, Stefanie Lejins and substitute Ella-Rose Brown's link-up ran rings around the home side in patches of the second half.
United captain Madeleine Perceval said it was disappointing to lose but they were happy with their performance.
"I think our intensity was there, and the stuff that we've been working on over the last couple of weeks really came out," she said.
Deakin proved why it remains undefeated in the 82nd minute. A shot on the edge of the box took a deflection off a Gungahlin defender, before substitute Chantel Jones slotted it home. There was initial confusion as to if Jones was offside, but the referee waved it away due to the deflection off the defender.
Croatia will look to continue its unbeaten streak when it faces Canberra United Academy next week. The last time the two sides met, in round one, it was a 2-2 draw.
