Two entangled whales have been spotted off Port Macquarie by ORRCA as the humpback migration north begins

The ORRCA Research Team has observed and confirmed another entangled humpback whale is moving slowly north.

The whale was spotted earlier yesterday (June 2) about two kilometres off the coast of Port Macquarie with rope attached to a white buoy which is wrapped around its dorsal fin.

It is swimming with two other whales and was first spotted from a headland. It is the smallest of the three whales.

An ORRCA spokesperson said the trio are heading north but could change direction at any moment.

"We have ORRCA members out at vantage points trying to track this whale as well," the spokesperson said.

The first entangled whale was spotted earlier this week off Port Macquarie. It has 200 metres of rope trailing behind it and was last seen off Coffs Harbour today (June 2).

Rescue teams are considering options over the coming days.

ORRCA is asking members of the public to keep an eye out and report sightings to the ORRCA Rescue Hotline on 9415 3333.

ORRCA urges people ease try to get a photo or video of the whale to confirm the entanglement plus a GPS location.

"Importantly, please do not approach a whale or attempt to disentangle it," the spokesperson said.

All whales and dolphins are protected in Australian waters.
