ACT sportsgrounds closed due to wet weather

All ACT government-maintained sportsgrounds will be closed for training and match play from Thursday June 24 until Sunday June 27.

But some playing across the border are waiting anxiously to see if matches will go ahead.

The Queanbeyan Whites are scheduled to host the Wests Lions in the John I Dent Cup at Campese Field on Saturday.

The Queanbeyan-Palerang Council had initially closed sportsgrounds under its jurisdiction until Saturday, at which point they were to be reassessed for match play.

AFL Canberra matches scheduled from Friday until Sunday have been cancelled, and the round will be recorded as a washout.

Capital Football officials have asked clubs to monitor its website, as it tries to salvage as many matches as possible this weekend.

National Premier League fixtures will be moved to synthetic pitches where possible, while all junior and state league games scheduled to be played on government venues will be considered washouts.

Senior rugby league's Canberra Raiders Cup has a league-wide bye this weekend, sparing competition officials any major dramas.

Hockey is expected to go ahead as per program at its all-synthetic venue in Lyneham.

"They will be regarded a washout and won't be rescheduled," Eastlake Demons football manager Shaun Young said about AFL Canberra matches.

"Everyone is disappointed that they don't get to roll out and play some footy. Until I came to Canberra, you'd never even heard of it or would even think that you play a winter sport and grounds would be closed because of wet weather."

The condition of the grounds will be assessed on Monday morning with government officials to make a decision on whether they are re-opened at the beginning of the week. A government statement said the decision has been made to minimise damage to turf surfaces and in the interest of safety.
