The Sydney Thunder will open their season in Canberra on December 6 against the Brisbane Heat, before returning on December 28 with a blockbuster against last year's runner-up Perth Scorchers.
It's a much more lightweight schedule for the capital, which hosted a whopping 13 matches last season as Manuka Oval propped up a Big Bash season which spent the summer desperately sidestepping coronavirus.
Cricket Australia is banking on Australia's latest wave of COVID-19, which has forced Sydney into a lengthy lockdown, to have settled down by the December 5 opener at the SCG between the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars.

"Like all leagues globally, we remain conscious of the need to be agile in response to the challenges of the pandemic," Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson said.
Covid-free Canberra was called on time and again last summer to provide a safe haven for the Big Bash, as Manuka Oval ground staff worked tirelessly to maintain the venue. All eight Big Bash sides utilised the ground, while Manuka Oval also hosted three finals matches including the Qualifier and the Challenger.
"Manuka was a fantastic venue last year that was able to step in and host more than a dozen BBL games when the competition really needed it so we are excited to be able to come back for two Sydney Thunder games this summer," Cricket NSW chief Lee Germon said.
"There is no doubt that Canberra is a second home for the Thunder and they have had some memorable games there."
