Anthony Albanese slams federal government COVID-19 vaccine rollout

During a visit to Tasmania on Tuesday, Mr Albanese stopped by the Northern Suburbs Medical Centre at Mowbray, where COVID-19 vaccinations have started.

GP Dr Andrew Jackson said they were happy to be playing their part in the vaccination effort.

"We're soldiering on, general practice around Australia and here, getting the job done," he said. "I think that earlier this year federal politicians said there was no race to vaccinate Australia - I disagreed with that then, and I say now the race is on to vaccinate Australia."

"The Prime Minister said in January this year at the National Press Club that this was the priority this year - and then not much happened," Mr Albanese added.

"It's true that it is a race, Scott Morrison was wrong when he said it wasn't.

"The fact that we're losing that race compared with other developed countries is the reason why half of Australia is locked down today."

Bass Liberal MHR Bridget Archer said she acknowledged there had been logistical challenges during the rollout, with more than 10 million doses now administered.

"But it's no time for politics or fear mongering which is unhelpful and may accidentally drive vaccine hesitancy," she said.

"I'm focussed on where we are now and where we are headed.

"Tasmania is continuing to perform well with our roll out and with an increase in Pfizer vaccinations to arrive soon the vaccination rates will continue to increase."
