Xavier's grand design takes centre stage in youth's push for Merimbula skatepark

However, Xavier Lehoczky is first to point out he's not the only youngster keen to see a new facility in Merimbula and working hard to make it happen.

Xavier, 10, appeared on the weekend's Today Show after his efforts to design a fully-fledged skatepark while at home during school lockdown came to light.

"I've been skating for about two years - I love it, it's fun," Xavier told Australian Community Media ahead of his national TV appearance.

"I'm pretty good at drawing, it's fun for me designing stuff."

Xavier said he found a 3D modelling program called SketchUp and, with some help from his dad Matt and YouTube tutorials, his first time using it has become a standout concept design.

While a new skatepark for Merimbula is yet to be approved over a council debate about location, Xavier's design is a great indication of what could be included - and especially about what young skaters are keen to see.

"I definitely wanted it to have a massive bowl, and a transition area," Xavier said.

"There's also a street section, a stair set, rails and boxes as well as a quarter pipe."

Xavier said it was "pretty good" that he and his design are attracting interest.

"It's nice that people notice, but it's not just me doing stuff. I don't just want this to be all about me.

"There are a lot of kids collecting bottles and having lemonade stands to raise money for the skatepark."

For many in the community, a new skatepark at Ford Park is the preferred option as a replacement for the aged facility at Berrambool Oval.

Xavier said he still uses the Berrambool Oval park, as well the Pambula one, but felt having one at Ford Park "would be much safer".

"A lot of my friends are hoping for a new skatepark too," he said.

"Merimbula's is tucked away in the back of town. It's hard to find and very small.

"There's not a lot of stuff there either, not a lot of flow.

"It's not that safe either and there's a trash-filled river right next to it.

"If it was at Ford it would be much safer because even if you got hurt, there are more people around to notice."

Xavier said he had seen the newly approved concept design for a skatepark for Eden and was impressed, hoping for something similar in his home town.

Xavier's father Matt Lehoczky said he was super proud of the efforts Xavier and indeed numerous other young skaters were putting into the push for a new skatepark in Merimbula.

"Just seeing them engage in the process is great, and that engagement means it will be better for them in the long run," Matt said.

"This idea was thought up spontaneously by Xav. There are also others baking cakes on a Friday and taking them to soccer on Saturday mornings to sell.

"There are good positive vibes in the community around this project and I'm happy to see it's not just the parents and government agencies involved."
