Tasmania's borders will close to parts of Victoria from midnight tonight after an "alarming spike" of coronavirus cases, possibly linked to the AFL grand final weekend, occurs in that state.

There are 19 local government areas in Victoria who are declared high risk from midnight, and anyone who has been in these areas in the past 14 days will be excluded from Tasmania unless an essential traveller.
Tasmania will be closed to the city's capital Melbourne, the major metropolitan municipality of Hume, as well as Yarra, Banyule, Greater Dandenong, Moonee Valley, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Moreland, City of Latrobe, Maribyrnong, Port Phillip, Cardinia, Whittlesea, Casey, Melton, Wyndham, Darebin and Mitchell.
The rest of Victoria is classified high risk level 2.
Premier Peter Gutwein said Victoria had recorded more than 2500 new cases.

He said anyone in Queensland at the moment should also remain on alert to the coronavirus situation, with more cases confirmed.
"For those people who are in Hume, there is no travel to Tasmania, importantly as well, there are a further additional 18 local government areas that have been identified as high risk level 1 areas as well," Mr Gutwein said.
"If you have been in one of those local government areas you will not be able to enter Tasmania unless proved as an essential traveller," he said.
"It is important if you are in Queensland at the moment and looking to come back, make sure you avail yourself of that situation in terms of what it may mean for you."
