Vic hospital figures fall as cases spike

Victoria recorded 996 locally acquired virus cases and another nine deaths on Wednesday, up from Tuesday's tally of 797 infections.

Hospitalisation numbers have fallen across the board, with 37 fewer people in hospital with the virus than the previous day.

The amount of people actively infected with COVID-19 in ICU dropped from 72 to 58 on Wednesday, and the seven-day hospital average fell by 16.

Meanwhile, vaccinations continue to climb with 87.8 per cent of Victorians aged over 12 now fully vaccinated and 93.2 per cent have received one dose.

Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Wednesday the state will get to 90 per cent full vaccination coverage "sooner than we thought".

He said the chief health officer is yet to sign off on the next set of changes to COVID-19 restrictions, but that "we want as few rules as possible".

Mr Andrews previously said he will announce a date for when the new restrictions take effect by the end of this week.

Once the 90 per cent mark is reached, initially predicted on November 24, vaccinated Victorians are promised a return to normality, with patron caps removed and masks only required on public transport and in high-risk settings.

Health Minister Martin Foley has indicated there may also be changes to isolation requirements when the vaccination milestone is met.
