Canberra records 1860 new cases of COVID-19, one death as vaccination rate hits 98.6 per cent

One new death has been recorded. A woman in her 80s has died at a residential aged care facility, as Omicron causes outbreaks in aged care homes across the Canberra region.

The ACT government says the high case load reported on Tuesday is partly due to a backlog of cases. They said Capital Pathology continues to process PCR tests collected from January 12, taken before the Kambah, Nicholls and Holt testing centres were temporarily closed.

On Monday, ACT Health announced that a woman in her 50s with COVID-19 died at Canberra Hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to 19.

This comes after two deaths, a man in his 50s and another in his 90s, was announced on Sunday.

The new cases bring the active total to 3585.

There are 63 people in hospital because of COVID in Canberra. Six of them are in intensive care, and two are being ventilated. This means there are 11 more people in hospital and two more people in intensive care with the virus than on Monday.

Of the 1860 new cases, 976 had a positive PCR result, while 884 returned a positive rapid antigen test.

The latest ACT Health COVID vaccination figures show 31.8 per cent of Canberrans aged 18 have received a third shot, while 98.6 per cent of over 12s have had two doses.

Some 30.2 per cent of Canberra children aged 5 to 11 have had their first dose of a vaccine.

Meanwhile, modelling by the ACT's public health system suggests the territory has reached the peak of this Omicron wave.

NSW has broken another unwanted record with 36 deaths and 29,830 new COVID-19 cases.

The new cases included 13,763 from self-reported rapid antigen tests.

There are 2850 patients in hospital, with 209 in intensive care.

About 26.5 per cent of people aged over 16 have had a booster shot, but the first-dose rate remained stable at 95.2 per cent.

Victoria has recorded another 22 deaths from COVID-19 and 20,180 new cases, as hospitalisations across the state drop.

There are 235,035 active coronavirus cases in the state and 1152 patients in hospital, a decrease off 77 from the previous day.

A total of 127 people are in intensive care with 43 of those on a ventilator.

The combined total of fatalities in Victoria and NSW have resulted in the deadliest day of the pandemic for Australia.

Tasmania has reported 1310 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths.

Twenty-five people are in hospital, with 12 of those receiving treatment specifically for virus symptoms and two in intensive care.

The other 13 positive cases are in hospital for unrelated medical conditions. This brings the active total to 6417.
