Two Turlinjah sisters have placed first and second in the Sporting Team events at the Royal Easter Show

Madeline and Chelsea Nickson - aged 16 and 13 respectively - were on two different teams competing in the Pony Club Sporting Team of Four event at the Royal Easter Show against riders from across NSW.

The event sees teams of five riders competing in 10 different equestrian games and challenges.

Four riders form a relay team for each of the events. Games include a bottle race, a flag race, a sword race, bending and a fishing race.

The fishing event is similar to duck fishing at a carnival, except competitors must hook rubber fish while mounted on the horse, before riding to the end of the course.

Madeline's team finished first overall; Chelsea's finished second.

Madeline previously competed at the Easter Show in 2018, but for Chelsea, it was the biggest event she had ever ridden at.

"It was very exciting being able to compete in front of a big crowd," Chelsea said.

"You are really nervous before your first event because it sets the tone for the day," Madeline said. "After that, it's just great fun."

Madeline said winning the event was unexpected, but that the team was "stoked".

"I was really excited for Chelsea to come second, too," she said. "I really wanted them to do well."

The sisters have been riding horses since before they could walk.

They are members of Moruya Pony Club and train at Turlinjah Park Equestrian Centre, run by their parents.

"Riding has always been something we want to do," Madeline said.

She feeds the horses before school in the mornings; Chelsea tends to the horses in the afternoon. They both try and ride every day.

"Lots of people do soccer and netball, but it's fun to do something different," Chelsea said.

"To be on a horse, going fast, is so fun.

"I love going fast."

She wants to keep going fast, and become an apprentice jockey. Madeline, wants to study an equine chiropract course.
