"If there is evidence to support the allegation then ... reckless wounding would be one of the charges that police would look at," he said.
Reckless wounding carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment in the district court and two years imprisonment in the local court.
No charges had been laid as of 4.30pm on Monday.
"In regards to where the knife came from and the motivation behind the stabbing, that's yet to be established," Supt Gorman said.

The school was put into lockdown following the stabbing and principal Brett Blaker told parents in an alert that it was "to allow emergency services to do their work".
"Counselling is being offered to any student who witnessed the incident or was otherwise affected by it, and this support can be accessed by contacting any members of the senior executive," he said.
Supt Gorman urged parents to talk to their children about their safety and that knives should not be carried around.

A NSW Department of Education spokesperson confirmed the "altercation between two students" and said staff provided first aid.
"Wellbeing supports are in place for all staff and students. As this is a NSW Police matter, it would be inappropriate to comment further," they said.
