Australia has condemned the deadly response to demonstrations in Iran as hundreds of people gathered outside Parliament House to protest the oppression of women and girls.

Iran has attracted international criticism over the death of a young woman in police custody.
Mahsa Amini died while being held by the country's morality police, who arrested the 22-year-old after accusing her of wearing her headscarf too loosely.
Ms Amini fell into a coma and died three days later. Her death has sparked mass protests across Iran, with at least 41 people killed by security forces.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Women's Minister Katy Gallagher denounced the "deadly and disproportionate" response.
"We are alarmed by reports that dozens of people have been killed and many more injured, including teenagers, during heavy-handed measures Iranian authorities have implemented to crack down on ongoing protests," they said in a joint statement.
"Australia supports the right of the Iranian people to protest peacefully and calls on the Iranian authorities to exercise restraint in response to ongoing demonstrations."
The ministers have also raised concerns about Ms Amini's death with the Iranian embassy in Canberra.
Hundreds of people gathered in Canberra on Tuesday to express anger and sadness over Ms Amini's death.
The crowd chanted and held placards as they gathered in the rain outside parliament.
Several parliamentarians joined the demonstrators on the lawns, including a number of Greens senators and Claire Chandler from the Liberal Party.
She urged the government to try and remove Iran from a United Nations body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women.
The Canberra demonstration follows similar rallies across Australia over the past week.
