The trainee crew responded to the real emergency while on a training mission.
Footage posted to the US Coast Guard Pacific Northwest instagram page depicts the swimmer's daring rescue, as he swam out into the raging ocean at the mouth of the Columbia River.
The yacht was rolled by dangerous surf, leaving the sole occupant stranded. The rescue swimmer was also collected by the powerful waves, but managed to eventually help the yacht driver to safety.
On arrival back on land, police said the man onboard had stolen the yacht. It's been reported that he was wanted on a string of charges, including criminal mischief.
One social media user responded to the footage saying 'that's perfect karma right there, steal a boat, get rolled by the universe. Literally'.
