A former NSW police officer has been charged with the historical rape of a woman after she came forward with allegations more than two decades later.

Police will allege the woman was 17 in 1998, when she was allegedly raped by a 28-year-old officer while he was on duty in southern NSW.
The now 53-year-old man was arrested at Tweed Heads Police Station at 10am on Tuesday, after the Professional Standards Command was alerted to the alleged offence in June 2020.
He was charged with two counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexual intercourse without consent and holder of public office misconduct.
The man was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on April 24.
