Cameron Myers, 17, ran a 3.33.26 at the Kamila Skolimowska track meet in Poland shaving less than half a second off the old fastest time.
Kenyan runner Nicholas Riptanui Kemboi had held onto the record since 2006 when Mr Myers was just two months old.
It was the Australian's first ever Diamond League race which is an elite series that sits at the highest tier of the World Athletics one-day meeting competitions.
This comes just six months after Mr Myers from Canberra took the Australian under-18 record for the 1500m from Ryan Gregson by more than three seconds.
This February, he became the second youngest person in history to break the four-minute mile. He was nine days older than current record holder Jakob Ingebrigtsen, but more than two seconds faster.
