A mysterious explosion that lit up the night sky has left police and the surrounding neighbourhood puzzled.

The loud bang and bright flash of light was noticed by the community on October 18 and police were called to Hazel Glen Drive in Doreen before 9pm.
"Officers patrolled the surrounding area but were unable to locate a scene or the source of the noise," Victoria Police said.

Speculation has boomed online with theories emerging from a combusting transformer to pranksters lighting fireworks and even an exploding methylamphetamine lab.
"It was so loud, it sounded like just next door," one resident said.

Some residents theorised a meteor could be responsible for the commotion after a celestial light show lit up Southern Australia's night sky on August 8.
