Western Australian police found the unconscious woman, 26, lying in a street in the Kimberley town of Kununurra on September 11, 2023.
She was taken to a local hospital with a critical head injury before being transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital the following day for emergency surgery.
The man, 27, was initially charged with aggravated grievous bodily harm and breached a family violence restraining order.
Police on Thursday said the woman had died and the man's charges had been upgraded to murder.
The pair were known to each other.
The man is scheduled to appear in Kununurra Magistrates Court on March 15.
