Motorists paid a whopping 242.3 cents per litre when refuelling in the coastal Queensland mining town of Weipa.
In Broome, on the other side of the country, the average price for petrol was 239.6 cents per litre in the March quarter.
ACCC commissioner Anna Brakey said that higher daily average petrol prices in April 2024 followed increases in international refined petrol prices.
"An upward trend in crude oil prices in the quarter was influenced by a number of international factors including conflict and geo-political tension in the Middle East, a rise in attacks on energy facilities in Russia and Ukraine and threats to shipping lanes in the Red Sea," Ms Brakey said.
Average retail diesel prices decreased by more than 10 cents per litre in all capital cities, the ACCC report said.
Ms Brakey recommmended fuel price apps and websites to find lower priced retailers in regional areas.
