The woman in her 50s was repeatedly stabbed in the chest in a Russell Lea property on Thursday about 11am, with a neighbour calling triple zero.
A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with the domestic-violence murder.
Investigators said on Thursday he was one of five residents at the house, with all occupants present when the attack happened.
The woman is yet to be formally identified.
The accused man went to Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of injuries and was then taken to Burwood Police Station and charged with murder.
He was refused bail and is due to face Parramatta Local Court on Friday.
Speaking on Thursday, Superintendent Christine McDonald said the pair were not thought to be in an intimate relationship.
"We know that the victim and the other housemates moved into this residence five to six weeks ago," she said.
