Three years on: Cleo Smith returns to normal life after kidnapping ordeal

She is pictured with her mother Ellie Smith, stepfather Jake Gliddon and younger sister Isla as life for the family returns to normal almost three years after the traumatic ordeal.

The photos are captioned "Cleo Smith, all grown up! The seven-year-old is enjoying life in Western Australia, loving school and being a big sister to Isla".

Cleo has remained out of the public eye since her kidnapping and the 18-day search to recover the then-four-year-old from the home of her abductor Terence Kelly.

The experience was "every parent's nightmare", Western Australia's police commissioner Col Blanch said after Kelly's conviction.

The police commissioner urged the Australian public to give Cleo and her family time and space to recover from the kidnapping in peace.

"To Cleo, we owe you your privacy, we owe you to grow up and have your dreams come true. From all of us, it's time for us to give you the space to do so," he said.

"The world hoped and prayed Cleo would be found safe. In a story that has been retold thousands of times, those hopes and prayers came true."

Kelly was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison but could be released in 2033 with time served.
