Father and daughter killed after pram rolled onto train tracks identified

Anand Runwal, 40, and his two-year-old daughter were killed by an incoming train at Carlton Train Station in southern Sydney on July 21.

Family friend Sreyas Gopalakrishnan Thottarath confirmed the news on Facebook.

"Dear friends, it is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic news of the untimely passing of Anand Runwal and his daughter," he wrote.

"Our deepest condolences go out to their family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. May their souls rest in peace."

Emergency services were called to Carlton Railway Station at 12.25pm on July 21 following reports the pram had rolled from the platform.

"As they've gotten out of the lift they've taken their hands off the pram for a very short time," St George Area Commander Superintendent Paul Dunstan said on July 21.

"Whether it is a gust of wind, or we're not quite sure, it appears the pram has instantly started to roll in the direction of the tracks."

One of the girls died at the scene but miraculously the other twin girl survived.

The mother, who was on the platform, was not injured.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the man made an instinctive and heroic effort to save his children.

"It's devastating for that family ... I can only imagine what they're going through," he told reporters on July 22.

Multiple investigations into the incident - including a coronial inquiry - would identify any necessary changes to improve safety.
