At iVigils around the world, Apple fans said iThank You and held up iCandles on their iPhones.
In death, as in life, Steve Jobs was remembered through the popular personal technologies he created.
The outpouring of grief - for a US executive rather than a celebrity or religious figure - was unprecedented.
Outside Jobs's home in Palo Alto, California, neighbours and fans scrawled "RIP" and drew hearts and apples on a stone wall.
In Hong Kong, Jobs fans scribbled "RIP", "We miss Steve" and other condolences on Post-It notes, and stuck them to an iPad display.
In the US and Europe, people left apples - some half-eaten to mimic the Apple Computer logo - outside stores beside rows of flower bouquets.
In Tokyo, people gathered at the Ginza shopping district and held up iPhones and iPads of a virtual flickering candle.
At the Apple store in Sydney, customer Stephen Jarjoura said Jobs's legacy would rival Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein.
"I was so saddened. For me it was like Michael Jackson or Princess Diana - that magnitude," he said.
In Syria - the home of Jobs's biological father - people caught up in the struggle to overthrow their government also took time to remember the innovator.
"This shows that this country can produce geniuses, if only we had freedoms instead of a suffocating dictatorship," 23-year-old Syrian student Sara told The Associated Press.
The web became a virtual shrine.
Social networking sites went into meltdown. People posted mash-up photos of Jobs on Twitter and photo-sharing site Flickr. Twitter registered about 10,000 tweets per second after Jobs's death was announced - the largest-ever online reaction - and outstripping the 493 tweets per second when Jackson died in 2009.
A 19-year-old Hong Kong design student who created a simple black and white image of the Apple logo with Jobs's face in silhouette became an instant web sensation.
Jonathan Mak's design was shared across the internet in hours. Hollywood actor Aston Kutcher used it as his Twitter profile image - and even commemorative caps and T-shirts with the design were sold on eBay.
"It's been a crazy day for me. I'm both excited and terrified," Mr Mak told Reuters, adding that he had since received a job offer.
"Originally, I was going to put a black modified logo against a white background. It just didn't feel somber enough. I just wanted it to be a very quiet commemoration. It's just this quiet realisation that Apple is now missing a piece. It's just kind of implying his absence."
Technology websites changed their homepages to represent Apple user interfaces.
Apple changed its homepage to a monochrome image of Jobs and asked fans to send their condolences to rememberingsteve@apple.com.
Technology magazine Wired turned its homepage black, with a list of tributes in white text below a photo of Jobs. The popular Boing Boing blog redesigned its homepage to look out an old Mac desktop. The Google search engine added a simple "Steve Jobs, 1955 - 2011" below its search bar.
Panic, a Mac software developer, display just one image on its homepage - a dark photo of Jobs sitting in the living room of a house, with the text: "Like some unbelievable movie montage, Apple went from a marginal novelty to rewriting the rules of entire industries, in the blink of an i. ... It's not exaggeration to say that everything we have today - from our apps, to our employees, to our office, to our houses, even of FaceTime moments with our kids and favorite songs fading in on a rainy walk home - is thanks to Apple."
October 14, the day Apple's newest product the iPhone 4S goes on sale, has been declared "Steve Jobs Day".
An iPhone candle app dedicated to Jobs encapsulated the shared feelings of bereavement.
"Dedicated to S. Jobs whose vision lit the way to the future for hundreds of millions," the introduction to the app said.
"You will always be remembered. Thank you to the thousands of people around the world who have used this app in tribute. May the candle never go out."
